Weather Favors SA Crops

Much drier conditions in late January have allowed for welcome flood receding in central Argentina. (NOAA graphic)

Drier weather during the past seven to 10 days has been favorable for corn and soybeans in central Argentina allowing for any remaining planting or replanting of crops and favoring crop development after some heavy rains earlier in the month.

The outlook calls for episodes of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the next seven days. Rainfall later in the week and over the weekend could be heavy with the possibility of some flooding. However, overall rainfall will be a positive event for corn and soybeans, setting them up for favorable filling conditions during February. A drop-off in acreage and production in the double-cropped soybean areas to the south is still expected due to hot/dry weather.

Overall weather conditions remain quite good for soybeans in Brazil. Frequent rainfall in central Brazil has disrupted the soybean harvest, but is favorable for double-cropped corn following the harvest. Moisture is good for filling soybeans in southern Brazil. Only in the minor growing areas of northeast Brazil (Bahia) can production losses be expected due to hot/dry weather.
