As of May 9, 35% of the Saskatchewan crop is estimated to have been planted, above the 34% reported for May 11, 2015 and well-ahead of the five-year average of only 10%. (DTN graphic by Nick Scalise)

Favorable conditions led to good planting progress last week, as reported in Thursday's weekly government crop report. As of May 9, 35% of the crop was seeded, while 34% was planted as of May 11, 2015 and only 10% of the acreage was planted as seen in the 2011-through-2015 average.

Cropland topsoil moisture has deteriorated in each of the past two weeks, from 10% short/1 % very short the week-ending April 25 to the current report of 21% short/ 3% very short as of May 9.

Rains across the southern part of the province this week will help shrink those areas, although one of the driest remains between Kindersley and Lloydminster which missed out on significant accumulations this week.

Another dry area, between Saskatoon and Prince Albert, will likely receive some beneficial rains with close to an inch received in both of those centers as of Wednesday.

A system which lingered over Saskatchewan brought beneficial rains to many areas in need this week. Some of the highest accumulations found as of Wednesday, using Environment Canada data, include 54.9 millimeters at Yorkton and 60.5 mm at Moose Jaw. Many areas across south-central areas of the province had previously received between 0 and 25 mm in the April 1-through-May 9 period, so many areas may have doubled or tripled their cumulative rainfall in a matter of days.
