While seeding operations remain behind the average pace across the prairies, Saskatchewan's pace has caught up to the five-year average at 64% complete as of May 26, up from 22% in the past week. (DTN chart)

According to Saskatchewan Agriculture's most recent crop report which covers the week ending May 26, planting progress in the province has moved ahead to equal the pace of the five-year average of 64%, while slightly behind the 10-year average of 68%.

The province did get off to a slower start, with progress 2% behind the five-year average as of May 12 and 7% behind the five-year pace as of May 26, as seen on the attached chart. The significant one-week jump of 42% (from 22% to 64%) of the intended acres over the past week equals the jump achieved during the same week in 2012.

The CWB reported to the Manitoba Farm Journal that overall prairie seeding is 59% complete as compared to the "normal" pace of 75% as of Monday, May 26. With Saskatchewan at its five-year average, the provinces of Alberta and Manitoba continue to lag historic pace.

Focus moving forward will be on the need for drier weather to complete seeding as well as for heat to advance the crop. Reports from the southwestern region of the province, the most advanced region of the province, suggest that roughly two-thirds of the crop is at normal stages for this time of year. In the northeast, roughly 50% of the cereals, both spring and fall seeded, are at normal stages while 59% of both the oilseeds and pulse crops are behind normal growth stages. In the other four regions, the majority of the crop is behind normal stages of growth.

The 2013 June 3 report also indicated the crop to be largely being normal development, excluding the southwestern region which was viewed as being at a largely normal level of development, with the final result being a record crop.

By region, the southwestern region is the most advanced at 80%, followed by the west-central region at 68%, the northwest at 69%, the northeast at 59%, southeast at 58% and the east-central at 52%.
