OMAHA (DTN) -- Of the 40 locations DTN contacted that showed offers for domestic distillers dried grains (DDG) for the week ended May 14, prices posted versus last week were unchanged to lower. DDG prices were mixed this week and more offers have begun to surface. For the most part, prices have returned to pre-COVID-19 levels and in some cases, are weaker. Cash corn prices for the week have fluctuated within a few cents and basis has actually improved slightly on average versus one week ago.

We are still faced with lower demand as some feeders moved away from DDG inclusion when prices spiked. However, the DDG supply chain is not even close to being back to normal and until that happens, prices will likely remain volatile.

The U.S. Grains Council noted recently that exporters are broadly expecting an uptick in DDGS sales after recent price declines and there are rumors that international buyers may be extending coverage.

Wednesday's Energy Information Administration ethanol report showed for the week ended May 8, U.S. ethanol inventory was drawn 1.4 million barrels (bbl) to a seven-week low. The draw followed an increase in blending activity that outpaced an increase in domestic production. U.S. ethanol production increased 19,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 617,000 bpd, again moving below domestic demand. During the four weeks ended May 8, U.S. ethanol plant output averaged 579,000 bpd, down 461,000 bpd or 44.3% against the comparable four-week period in 2019. During the four weeks ended May 8, blending demand averaged 592,000 bpd, down 340,000 bpd or 36.5% against the comparable year-ago period
