The blue bars represent the percentage of selected Saskatchewan crops harvested as of Sept. 16, as measured against the primary vertical axis. The brown bars represent the percentage harvested as of the same week in 2018-19 and the grey bars represent the five-year average for this week. The black line with markers represents the number of acres left to be harvested, based on Statistics Canada's harvested acre estimates. (DTN graphic by Cliff Jamieson)

The Saskatchewan government has estimated the province's overall harvest at 23% complete, as of Sept. 16, up from 18% a week ago with heavy rains over the past week in the south-central areas of the province delaying progress. This is down from the 62% complete this week last year and the five-year average of 50% complete, while is equal to the overall pace reported for the same week of September 2014.

An estimated 13% of the spring wheat is estimated as harvested, up from 7% estimated in the previous week, while down from the five-year average of 42.6%. This would indicate an estimated 7.5 million acres yet to be harvested, based on Statistics Canada's harvested acre estimate. The government estimates that an additional 38% of the crop has been swathed or is ready to straight combine, slightly behind the 43% reported in 2014, when the pace of harvest was comparable.

An estimated 17% of the durum is off, compared to the five-year average of 53.4%, with an estimated 3.3 million acres yet to be harvested. An estimated 60% of the durum crop is expected to fall within the top two grades, but this seems premature with 83% of the crop yet to be harvested. An estimated 27% of the crop is estimated to be swathed or ready to straight combine, down from an estimate of 32% in 2014.

An estimated 17% (34.8%) of the oats and 39% of the barley (53.2%) is harvested, with the five-year average in brackets. An estimated 1.2 million acres of oats and 1.8 million acres of barley remain to be harvested.

The government estimates that 6% of the canola was harvested as of Sept. 16, well behind the 44% harvested in 2018 and the five-year average of 38.8%. This estimate would imply 10.7 million acres left to be harvested. Current estimates indicate that 56% of the crop is either swathed or ready to straight cut, below the 67% reported for the same week in 2014.

An estimated 79% of the peas (90.8%) and 75% of the lentils (81.4%) are estimated off as of Sept. 16, with the five-year average in brackets. This implies a further 484,008 acres of peas and 830,000 acres of lentils yet to go.
