This chart demonstrates the harvest pace in Saskatchewan over the past five years. As of August 26, 5% of Saskatchewan's crop had been harvested, which places progress behind the five-year average of 15%. (DTN graphic by Nick Scalise)

Saskatchewan's harvest activity is now general throughout the province, aided by above-normal temperatures that have resulted in quicker crop maturity. As of the August 26 report, 5% of the provincial crop has been harvested, which compares to an average of 15% for the same time over the past five years.

The attached chart indicates the weekly Saskatchewan harvest progress as experienced over 2008 to 2012. The pace of the 2011 and 2012 harvests were almost identical, with completion in early October, while 2009 may be viewed as an outlier year, with excess moisture in October delaying the completion of harvest into the month of November.

Yield estimates for many crops have improved in the past two weeks. The simple average of the estimates for the six crop regions (four in the case of durum) indicates the following yield improvements from the August 12 estimate to the August 26 estimate:

Winter wheat 36.5 bpa to 40.3 bpa

Spring wheat 38 bpa to 39.5 bpa

Durum 37 bpa to 37.5 bpa

Canola 31.5 bpa to 32.5 bpa

Peas 38.3 bpa to 34.8 bpa

Barley 58.7 bpa to 60.2 bpa

Note that these estimates are indicated as a snapshot in time and not a final yield estimate for the crop.
