Senate Farm Bill Advances

The Senate Agriculture Committee on Wednesday approved a farm bill. The vote was 20 to 1 because Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, is opposed to the bill until he gets a payment limits amendment considered.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he wants the bill passed on the Senate floor before the July 4 recess that begins on June 29.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said he hopes the bill will come up next week. Senate Agriculture ranking member Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., joked that the floor action will take only one hour. Roberts pointed out that the 2014 farm bill took only two days to pass.

I agree. The check-off dollars we pay should be allowed to be used for lobbying (it is our money). This would be the best way to accomplish this goal. It is a crazy that this money is only to be used for research and promotion for the whole world while being paid by US farmers. It is the worse deal ever! Until this changes we really don't have a seat at the table.

Farmers, pay attention: It's not the USDFA (United States Department For Agriculture); never has been, in spite of often being thought so. The USDA is about cheap food for American voters -- of which we're only 1% -- and insurance of America's strength against unanticipated crises, a principle with which we probably all more or less agree. The only way to combat next-to-free food for the consolidated multinational agribusiness community mindset is to pony up big bucks in political money, something actual on-the-land farmers collectively are particularly lousy at.

If the Senate and the House pass what they have proposed in these conditions we are experiencing today in the market place they should all be voted out no matter what party they belong to. What we need is to have the loan rates for these commodities raised to modern values. Here $1.84 corn and $4.84 soybeans is a joke. That is how you give farmers support. These politicians that are patty themselves on the back for some more of the same failed policy are a fraud as well as the ag groups supporting these current programs. No major changes when we are entering a trade war means we have no voice. Certainly we need equal and fair trade, this is needed, but ag unfortunately will be the casualty. I hear these politicians bragging about the last farm bill which was a lottery scheme, a total failure, where are they now, bragging that this pathetic farm bill will get passed. What a joke! Trade wars, rising interest rates, sound familiar? Remember the 80's? These farm bill proposals will not save anyone. This is a politician's farm bill not a farmer's farm bill.

Where's the details? Must be a bad bill to pass so easily! No meaningful changes or reform?
