Compared to last week steers less than 600 lbs sold 7.00 to 10.00 higher, over 
600 lbs sold mostly 2.00 lower.  Heifers less than 500 lbs sold 15.00 higher, 
500 to 800 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower and over 800 lbs sold 2.00 to 5.00 
higher on a light test of those heavier weights. Demand was good to very good 
on some weights and classes of cattle throughout the week.   Little downward 
pressure on the feeder cattle sales at week's close as the CME cattle boards 
stubbed their toe on Friday and closed the day sharply lower. Overall, the 
market is still very good for the second week of January. Quite a few 
replacement heifers were noted in this week's report with some getting sold by 
the head.  It looks like there will be several pastures full of breeding 
heifers this summer. Maybe a slight build up. But, quite a few ranchers have 
old cows and need to swap for something more youthful.  Feedlot trade finally 
happened on Friday with live sales steady to 1.00 higher from 232.00 to 233.50 
and dressed sales steady at 365.00.

CORN Strategies Snapshot

TREND: The trend for March corn is sideways for now.

NONCOMMERCIAL OUTLOOK: Noncommercial corn traders held a net-short futures position of 51,704 contracts as of Jan. 20 and were net-sellers of 18,281 contracts during the CFTC reporting period following a bearish surprise in the Crop Production and WASDE reports released by USDA on Jan. 12.

COMMERCIAL OUTLOOK: Commercial corn traders held a net-long position of 68,044 contracts as of Jan. 20 and were net-buyers of 19,121 contracts through the CFTC reporting period. The March 2026 contract is priced 7 3/4 cents lower than the May 2026 contract, mostly steady through the week. National average corn basis firmed a penny through the week to 35 cents under the March board.
