USDA South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary

USDA South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary 01/19 07:00 AMS_2027 MARS South Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary -, Livestock Weighted Average Report for 01/12/2026 - Final Summary This Week Last Reported Last Year ------------------------------------------------------------ Total Receipts: ------------------------------------------------------------ FEEDER CATTLE 31702 32364 36526 SLAUGHTER CATTLE 1300 1519 1600 Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers 5.00 to 10.00 higher, instances to 15.00 higher on 400-500 lbs. Very good demand for all weights of steers and heifers. Higher futures prices, until Friday, helped to propel the feeder cattle market higher. Cash fed cattle selling in the 232.00-233.00 range also helped to add some support to the market. The market is incredibly active for those lighter weight cattle, and for replacement quality heifers. The market is active on the heavier weight cattle bound for finishing yards, but with the supply so much more readily available than the light weights, buyers can be more selective and not have to fight as hard to get cattle bought. Cattle feeders are feeling more cautious than the backgrounders, as they had to endure losses on cattle sold before the market recovered. The weather has been open and rather mild, for mid January, which made it easy for cattle producers to get their cattle shipped to town. Winter made a harsh comeback on Friday with high winds, below zero temps and worse windchills in the forecast for the coming week. Cattle producers were quick to get cattle consigned and sold this week as the market has recovered so much of it's lost ground. --------------------------------------------------------------- FEEDER CATTLE --------------------------------------------------------------- BEEF/DAIRY HEIFERS - Cattle futures are finding sufficient support to push higher on the anticipation of higher cash trade. Feeder cattle led the charge, pushing through resistance. Hogs ran out of steam, correcting for the overbought status.
