In the first nine months of 2015, Canada's Farm Cash Receipts are 1.6% higher than the same period in 2014 (blue bar) and 12% above the five-year average from 2010 to 2014 (red bar). The January-through-September total receipts, crop receipts and livestock receipts remain well-above the five-year average for the same period. (DTN graphic by Nick Scalise)

Statistics Canada's report on Farm Cash Receipts shows the country's total farm receipts, receipts generated from selling crops and receipts from livestock and products are reported to be 1.6%, .7% and 2.1% higher in the first nine months of 2015 when compared to the same period in 2014. This is shown by the blue bars on the attached chart.

The red bars show receipts over the January-through-September period for the same three categories as compared to the five-year average for the same period. Total receipts are 12% above the five-year average, which includes a 10.3% increase in crop receipts and a 19.5% increase in livestock receipts.

While the news may not be exciting, given the growth in input costs, crop receipts are certainly faring better than may have been forecast in early summer months.

Considering year-over-year changes reported in the first nine months of the calendar year, receipts from both canola and wheat have increased, as measured as a percentage of total crop receipts. Receipts from the sale of canola have jumped from 25.1% of total crop receipts in the first three quarters of 2014, to 26.5% of the total in 2015. Receipts from wheat (excluding durum), jumped from 16.8% in 2014 to 17.2% in 2015.

The largest year-over-year shift is seen in corn and lentils, when considering their respective receipts as a percent of the total crop receipts. Corn receipts in the January-through-September period have fallen from 6.3% of the country's total crop receipts in 2014 to 4.7% of the total in the current year. Receipts generated selling lentils have increased from 2.7% of the total crop receipts in 2014, to 4.3% in 2015, given record prices and current data which reflects near-record production in 2015.
