The wet weather pattern in the Midwest is beginning to have more of a negative impact on corn and soybeans in the Midwest as we transition from filling to maturation and harvesting. Iowa reported their wettest week of the year last week with above normal rainfall nine out of the last 12 weeks. There are also reports of excessive rainfall impacting crops in Minnesota, northeast North Dakota and Indiana. The main issues reported are stalk rot in corn and mold and fungus in soybeans.

No relief from this wet pattern is indicated at least through the end of this month. The longer the wet pattern continues the harder it is to dry things out as the sun angle lowers with each passing day. Along with disease issues high moisture corn and soybeans can also be expected as the weather does not allow crops to dry out sufficiently in the field.

The crop that is benefitting from this wet pattern is winter wheat in the Southern Plains. Planting is underway with the expectations of favorable pre-winter development due to adequate soil moisture.
