The Saskatchewan government has estimated that 77% of the province's crop has been harvested as of Sept. 21, which compares to 62% last week, the five-year average of 59% and the 10-year average of 58%. This is double the pace estimated for this week last year, when an estimated 39% was reported harvested as of Sept. 23. Historical data from the province shows that 78% of the crop was harvested as of Sept. 23, 2007, the last time that harvest has achieved a similar pace.

Despite weekend rainfall over the western side of the province on the weekend, the estimate for the Northwest Region harvested area jumped 25 percentage points, the largest week-over-week change seen across the six regions, while all regions are now ahead of their respective five-year average pace. The West-Central Region leads at 21 percentage points ahead of average, while the Southwest Region is 20 points ahead of average.

An estimated 74% of the province's spring wheat is harvested as of Sept. 21, up from 31% reported for this week last year and the five-year average of 53.5% complete. As seen on the attached chart, a further 19% of the spring wheat crop is either estimated as swathed or ready to straight combine (brown bar), while when added to the amount harvested of 74% is 10.7% higher than the five-year average, as indicated by the line with markers measured against the secondary vertical axis.

An estimated 95% of the durum is harvested, up from 48% harvested this time last year and the five-year average of 68% for this week. A further 4% is viewed as swathed or ready to straight combine, with these two numbers reflecting a total that is 18.5% above the five-year average.

An estimated 61% of the canola crop is viewed as harvested as of this week, up from 17% last year and the five-year average of 44%. A further 35% of the acreage is viewed as either swathed or ready to straight combine. This total is 5.6% higher than the five-year average for this week.

An estimated 34% of the soybean crop is harvested as of Sept. 21, up from 8% last year and the five-year average of 18%. An additional 10% is ready to straight cut. These numbers combined represent a pace that is 74.2% ahead of the five-year average.

Rains over the past week eased the dry conditions of the province slightly, although an estimated 63% of the province remains viewed as short-to-very short topsoil moisture, down from last week's 2020 high of 70%.
