USDA South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary

USDA South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary 07/28 08:35 AMS_2027 MARS South Dakota Weekly Cattle Auction Summary -, Livestock Weighted Average Report for 07/21/2025 - Final Summary This Week Last Reported Last Year ------------------------------------------------------------ Total Receipts: ------------------------------------------------------------ FEEDER CATTLE 9111 7306 11254 SLAUGHTER CATTLE 617 680 823 Compared to last week: Feeder steers 5.00 to 7.00 higher, heifers 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers. As the cash fed cattle market holds around 240.00, cattle feeders' outgoing fat cattle are very profitable, which is giving them the incentive to replace them quickly. The CME Live Cattle contracts remain steeply discounted to the cash trade, much the way it has been for the whole year. Fat cattle are not only reaching prices that seemed to be unobtainable, but are now able to hold at those levels during the time of year where fat cattle supplies are most readily available. Packers have seen their margins deteriorate as the boxed beef market drops sharply, but they have not been able to get leverage over cattle feeders and buy cattle cheaper. These facts are keeping the feeder cattle market at the auctions extremely active as new record prices continue to be set. Some grass yearlings are starting to be offered but still not many cattle moving in the auctions yet as barns stay on their summer schedules. --------------------------------------------------------------- FEEDER CATTLE --------------------------------------------------------------- BULLS - Medium and Large 1 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price 6 512-512 512 400-400 400 HEIFERS - Large 1 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price 51 1004-1004 1004 265-265 265 Fleshy 59 1076-1098 1080 269.35-278 271.14 4 1138-1138 1138 257-257 257 7 1313-1313 1313 245.5-245.5 245.5 Fleshy HEIFERS - Medium and Large 1 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price 7 448-448 448 435-435 435 30 487-496 492 437.5-437.5 437.5 138 503-549 527 387.5-427.5 401.91 379 609-640 633 355-374 362.2 60 650-653 651 348-360 350.01 7 685-685 685 319-319 319 Fleshy 47 715-715 715 339-339 339 Spayed 323 708-741 725 314-347 330.51 297 752-786 766 311.5-340 323.3 256 805-840 824 305-324 313.03 81 858-894 880 279-310 297.54 393 902-946 914 280-307.5 297.58 322 953-967 962 284.5-302 292.56 140 954-986 984 270-273 270.55 Fleshy HEIFERS - Medium and Large 1-2 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price 5 535-535 535 345-345 345 5 555-555 555 345-345 345 66 699-699 699 319-319 319 75 813-813 813 306-306 306 STEERS - Large 1 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price 1429 1000-1016 1009 294-315.5 310.48 179 1051-1075 1055 282-304.75 299.64 9 1102-1102 1102 271-271 271 Fleshy 362 1102-1146 1119 279.5-291 286.82 114 1165-1179 1172 276.75-278.6 277.67 155 1210-1234 1213 264.25-275 273.3 STEERS - Medium and Large 1 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price 8 497-497 497 492-492 492 13 525-525 525 475-475 475 103 550-596 561 408-444 431.43 10 607-639 629 390-390 390 261 665-696 675 364-386 380.37 129 709-736 717 364.5-390 379.18 142 783-795 789 350-351 350.5 117 803-842 830 322-348 338.78 7 856-856 856 305-305 305 Full 200 866-897 886 310.5-328 317.64 619 906-945 929 307.5-327 318.18 1295 952-999 976 294-325.5 314.45 STEERS - Medium and Large 1-2 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price 3 293-293 293 545-545 545 38 560-564 562 425-430 428.03 84 692-692 692 329-329 329 97 711-747 722 295-345 330.63 14 740-740 740 351-351 351 Thin Fleshed 10 891-891 891 303-303 303 75 906-936 932 292-297 296.35 --------------------------------------------------------------- SLAUGHTER CATTLE --------------------------------------------------------------- BEEF/DAIRY STEERS - Choice 2-3 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price Dressing 24 1518-1604 1555 236-240 237.91 Average DAIRY STEERS - Choice 2-3 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price Dressing 17 1418-1454 1443 210-211 210.29 Average HEIFERS - Choice 2-4 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price Dressing 115 1246-1341 1276 241-244 243.04 Average 34 1267-1561 1439 240-247 244.65 Average Certified Prgms STEERS - Choice 2-3 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price Dressing 11 1438-1453 1449 242-242.5 242.36 Average Certified Prgms 65 1451-1478 1460 240-244.5 243.27 Average STEERS - Choice 3-4 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price Dressing 58 1511-1595 1549 243.5-245 244.58 Average STEERS - Select and Choice 2-3 (Per Cwt/Actual) Head Wt Range Avg Wt Price Range Avg Price Dressing 18 1270-1397 1362 241-241 241 Average Return to Feed

Cattle futures spent about as much time in the negative as they did in the positive Wednesday, closing mixed. That hesitancy may continue Thursday until cash is confirmed. Hogs were under pressure from the sharp losses in cutouts on Tuesday and packers showed less interest Wednesday.
