OMAHA (DTN) -- The average price for domestic distillers dried grains (DDG) from the 40 locations DTN contacted with spot offers for the week ended Oct. 14 was $165 per ton, up $1 on average from the prior week. DDG prices remain firm as higher soybean prices are causing some feeders to switch out soymeal in rations, adding in DDG, corn gluten feed or other proteins.

Based on the average of prices collected by DTN, the value of DDG relative to corn for the week ended Oct. 14 was 116.52%, above the 5-year average of 109%. The value of DDG relative to soybean meal was 45.38%. The cost per unit of protein for DDG was $6.11, compared to the cost per unit of protein for soybean meal at $7.65.

The Energy Information Administration reported for the week ended Oct. 9 domestic ethanol inventories gained as plant production rose for a second week, while blending demand reached the highest level since COVID-19 lockdowns were initiated. Ethanol plant production rose to a 5-week high but 3.5% lower than the corresponding week in 2019. Four-week average output fell 47,000 barrels per day (bpd) against a year ago to 912,000 bpd.
