Persistent Heat and Drought Slash EU Corn Production in 2026

Record heat and drought across Europe during summer 2026 severely reduced corn production, according to a new report from the European Union's (EU) Copernicus climate monitoring service.

The report titled "European summer 2026: records, extremes and context," leads off with a stark summary: "Summer 2026 was marked by an exceptional persistence of heat across Europe, accompanied by severe dry conditions, low river flows and wildfire activity."

The scope of extreme heat is significant. The EU report notes that during the summer months, repeated heat waves covered large areas of Europe from May all the way to September. Summer 2026 was Europe's third-warmest on record -- trailing only 2024 and 2022. Average temperatures were 1.17 degrees Celsius (2.1 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal.

The intense heat had a broad footprint of influence. During this past summer, the Copernicus report notes that 37% of European land experienced a record in daily, monthly or seasonal temperature. The notable heat was not just on the land, but also in the ocean; more than half (56%) of Europe's surrounding seas recorded much warmer-than-average temperatures.

Concerns raised during corn pollination that heat and drought would damage production have now been confirmed.

The Oct. 9, 2026, USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report places the total EU corn crop at 48 million metric tons (mmt), 16% less than the total last year of 56.9 mmt.

The large-scale continental summary does not give full detail of this year's heat impact on summer crops, especially corn. USDA's Foreign Ag Service (FAS) stressed some damaging heat impact to the largest EU corn-growing countries. France especially was hard-hit by this year's extreme summer conditions.

"In France, the corn production will be the lowest since 1976 when a severe drought impacted French agriculture," the FAS noted in its latest outlook. "The five consecutive heatwaves and the drought that started in May 2026 scorched pastureland and corn fields altogether ... the French corn yield is expected to be below 6.5 MT/Ha (256 bushels per acre), 10 percent down from the July estimate and 30 percent below the 5-year average." The FAS outlook notes similar prospective reductions in Germany, northern Italy, Hungary and Croatia.

Besides the prospect of lower crop production, heat and drought have also created some big water deficits. The EU Copernicus report notes that "Across 12 major European river systems, summer 2026 saw a water deficit of 69 km3, equivalent in volume to almost two years of water supplied for public use across the EU."

Long-range forecasts show the potential for above-normal precipitation in Europe during this coming winter and into spring 2027. After this year's calamity of heat and drought, Europe's farmers will likely accept every drop they can get.
