Weekly State Crop Report Comments

Corn and soybean planting slowed across the Midwest this week due to cool, wet weather. The states most affected are in the east with both corn and soybean planting progress behind normal. In the main growing areas of the western Midwest much of the corn has been planted except in Nebraska with producers now concentrating on soybeans. Freezing temperatures over the weekend as low as 27 degrees in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota may have damaged some newly emerged corn, which is ahead of normal due to rapid planting progress. The outlook calls for cool, unsettled weather through the end of the week. Temperatures trend milder next week with more limited rainfall, especially in the east, which could use the dry weather the most.

Planting progress is ahead of normal for all crops in North Dakota due ro relatively dry weather. Freezing temperatures over the weekend may force some replanting of emerged corn. Producers are still assessing the situation. More rain would benefit crop emergence and development. Little is expected this week along with warming temperatures. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase next week.

Cool, wet weather is mostly favorable for heading and filling wheat in the Southern Plains; some spraying for rust disease is starting to be reported. Cool, wet weather is forecast to continue through the rest of this week. It should be milder next week, although rainfall may continue, especially in eastern areas. It will reach the point later in the month and on into early June where too much rain will become unfavorable for maturing wheat and the harvest.

The winter wheat crop in the eastern Midwest and north Delta are also unfavorably wet with some rust disease being reported. Wet weather continues through the end of this week. Drier, warmer weather is forecast during the first half of next week.
