The Saskatchewan government's Crop Report as of Aug. 7 shows scattered showers across the province, while the area of the province's cropland with topsoil moisture rated adequate is shown to deteriorate for the eighth time in nine weeks to 12%, as shown by the blue line on the attached graphic.

The deterioration is seen slowing, with the area rated adequate falling by 23 points over the month of June and a further 40 points over the month of July. So far this month, this rating has fallen 1 point, while precipitation since Aug. 7 this week may help stabilize this rating. On the same week of the 2021 drought year, this rating was shown at 6% adequate and 94% short to very short.

Harvest as of Aug. 7 is reported at 4% complete, which compares to the province's five- and 10-year average of 2%. Harvest progress by crop varies widely. An estimated 15% of winter wheat and 0.3% of spring wheat has been harvested, close to average for winter wheat and equal to the five-year average for spring wheat. At the same time, the dry pea harvest at 22.3% complete is well-ahead of the five-year average of 7.9% while 16.7% of the lentils have been taken off, also ahead of the 6.3% five-year average.

DTN forecasts call for continued showers across the Prairies during the next two weeks, while temperatures are to remain lower than normal.
