Dry Conditions Weigh on Saskatchewan Crop Condition Ratings
The trend in the crop condition index based on Saskatchewan Agriculture's condition ratings has continued lower for almost all the crops shown on the attached chart, although this week's data shows the lentil crop stabilizing. Overall, the province rates all crops as good to fair.
The condition indices for the select crops on the attached chart show the largest drops over the past two weeks to the week ended July 10 for flax at 60 points, canola at 51 points, and soybeans at 45 points. Despite the drop in the condition index for soybeans, it remains the highest rating for the crops shown at 165 points.
The spring wheat index is shown falling for a third week, reported at 118 points, down from the original reading or 212, while the canola index has fallen to 115 points, from the initial reading of 191.
The durum index has slumped to 43 points, down from its initial rating of 203, the lowest seen for any of the crops shown and by a wide margin.
When compared to the five-year average for this week, the winter wheat rating is the only crop where the current condition index is above average, up 29 points from this average. The current index for soybeans is only 1.4 points below average, while the canola index is a modest 12 points below average.
The spring wheat index is 38 points below average and the durum index is 75 points below average, the largest drop relative to average for the crops shown. The lentil index is 41 points below average, while the dry pea index is 45.2 points below average.
The province notes that precipitation is desperately needed to slow crops from the current rapid pace of development experienced.
