There was little change in USDA weekly crop condition ratings for corn in the Midwest during the past week, as the crop heads towards maturity. We saw some improvement in ratings for soybeans, except in Minnesota where conditions were down a little because of a lack of sunshine and warm weather. Ratings were also lower in Illinois due to some dryness. Iowa had its highest statewide average rainfall since mid-May, and this provided some improvement in crop ratings for soybeans.

The outlook for the Midwest during the next seven days calls for mostly dry weather in the west, with near to above normal temperatures. The eastern Midwest will see some rain over southern and eastern areas later in the week as the remains of Harvey move through. However, no significant flooding is expected. There are signs on the long-range guide of a possible turn to colder weather in the Midwest later next week. This situation bears watching as crop development lags behind normal in most areas and makes crops in the northwest vulnerable to an early freeze.

Despite some improvement in the Northern Plains, many areas remain unfavorably dry, affecting filling corn and soybeans. Little rainfall is expected during the next 10 days.

The weather will be warm through the weekend, cooler next week. The threat of some much colder weather later next week bears watching as crop development runs behind normal.
