Possible Hot Weather Again for Dry Areas

Despite weather cooling down and limiting stress, topsoil moisture continues to diminish in Nebraska, the Dakotas and Montana. This has led to deteriorating crop ratings for spring wheat and corn.

There are increasing indications that the ridge of high pressure that has brought very hot weather to the southwest states this past week will rebuild to the north and east next week.

This could result in some very hot weather returning to these dry areas, similar to what occurred earlier in June. With the likelihood that soil moisture levels will not improve all that much prior to the onset of hot weather, the potential exists for further ratings decline for spring wheat and corn, especially any of the corn crop that may be pollinating.

Most of the major Midwest corn and soybean areas east of the Missouri River should continue to see generally favorable weather for crop development with adequate soil moisture and no persistent hot weather. This will favor early corn pollination.

The winter wheat harvest is nearing completion in Texas and Oklahoma and is nearly 50% complete in Kansas. With no major disruptions, we would expect most of the harvest in Kansas to be complete during the next seven days.

Any comment on why the dryness persists in the west? What is different this year? Thanks...
