Crop ratings for corn and soybeans still remain quite good in the major growing areas of the Midwest.

The latest state crop reports continue to indicate very favorable crop ratings throughout the Western Corn Belt and Illinois. Dryness has caused a small deterioration in ratings in Indiana, while Ohio continues to be affected by the drought centered over the Northeast states with crop conditions falling sharply.

Most of the corn crop in the Midwest and Northern Plains is past pollination and is now in the filling stages of development. The soybean crop is in the pod set and fill stages.

We are expecting to see enough rain in the Northern Plains and Midwest during the next seven days to maintain favorable crop ratings. In fact, an expected increase in rainfall in Ohio and Indiana should lead to improved crop ratings.

A weakening of the ridging in the southern states during the next seven days will allow the jet stream to shift farther south. This will allow for an increase in scattered showers and thunderstorms along with more seasonal temperatures. This will benefit filling soybeans and late-filling corn as well as cotton in West Texas which has been suffering from drought.

Our latest calculation of the sea surface temperature departure in the equatorial eastern pacific stands at minus 0.2 degrees Celsius for the month of July. It was minus 0.1 during the month of June. We remain in neutral conditions with no signs of a developing La Nina at this time.
