Crop Progress Reports Generally Favorable

The latest state crop progress reports show corn planting virtually complete in the Midwest except for a few areas along the Ohio River. Soybean planting is moving right along after a favorable week of drier weather and is nearing completion in some areas. Ratings for developing corn and soybeans are quite good, especially in the western Midwest where planting was done early. The weather outlook for the Midwest during the next 7-10 days looks very favorable for crops with little rainfall this week allowing for soybean planting to finish up along with plenty of sunshine for developing crops. Some increase in scattered showers are expected next week but rainfall is expected to be near to below normal. This drier trend will actually be favorable as it will force the crops to become better rooted to find moisture.

North Dakota has seen some improved topsoil moisture to support germination and development of crops. Most crops are planted. Enough rain should occur during the next 7-10 days to continue to support crop development.

The Southern Plains winter wheat areas see the crop mostly in the maturing stage of development. The harvest is underway in Oklahoma with a few fields reported harvested in Kansas. The weather looks good for maturing and harvesting wheat through the weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms early next week could cause some disruptions.

Corn pollination is increasing across the southern U.S. with generally adequate soil moisture due to recent rains and no significant heat stress. Drier weather during the next seven days will deplete soil moisture with some hotter weather developing over the weekend.
