As of Oct. 21, an estimated 83% of Saskatchewan's crop is estimated as harvested (black line), which compares to the five-year average of 93% (brown line). The pace of harvest for both 2009 and 2016 were included for comparison, recent challenging harvests. (DTN graphic by Cliff Jamieson)

Saskatchewan Agriculture estimates that 14% of the province's crop was taken off over the past week ending Oct. 21. This points to an estimated 83% of the crop off, down 10 percentage points from the five-year average of 93% harvested as of this week. Producers pushed hard over the past week; one week ago estimates for harvested acres were 19 percentage points behind the five-year average.

What is interesting is the pace of progress seen in the northern regions when compared to the southern regions. Over the past two weeks, the Northwest region has taken of 47% of its estimated acres, while the Northeast Region has taken off 33% of the region's acres. This compares to the 17% taken off in the Southwest Region and an estimated 23% taken off in the Southeast over this same period.

While in no way a predictor of what's to come, the pace of two of the most recent challenging harvests (2009 and 2016) have been plotted against the current pace and the five-year average (2014-2018) pace. Reported data for these two crop years point to mostly stalled activity for the month of October with the push towards the finish line resuming in November.
