Soybean Harvest Slows Somewhat Last Week, While Corn Harvest Continues at Steady Pace

OMAHA (DTN) -- Widespread precipitation across the U.S. last week slowed soybean harvest somewhat, while corn harvest continued at a steady pace, USDA NASS said in its weekly national Crop Progress report Monday.

Soybean harvest progressed 11 percentage points last week to reach 60% complete as of Sunday, Oct. 18. That was a smaller weekly gain than the previous week when harvest moved ahead by 15 percentage points. Last week's slower progress puts the current soybean harvest 13 percentage points behind last year's 73% but still 5 percentage points ahead of the five-year average pace of 55%.

"Illinois' soybean harvest is 51% complete, Iowa is 70% done -- 19 points ahead of average -- with Minnesota at 94% harvested compared to the average of just 64%, and South Dakota 86% done -- far ahead of the 57% average," said DTN Senior Analyst Dana Mantini.

For the remainder of the soybean crop, 95% of soybeans were dropping leaves, equal to the five-year average, NASS said.

While soybean harvest slowed last week, corn harvest continued at a steady pace -- up 11 percentage points -- to reach 52% complete as of Sunday. That was just a slightly smaller weekly gain than the previous week's 12 percentage points. Corn harvest is now 5 percentage points behind 57% last year but 11 points ahead of the five-year average of 41%.

"Illinois corn is 62% harvested, and Iowa is 43% finished, with Nebraska 41% done," Mantini said. "Ohio is lagging at just 25% harvested."

For the remainder of corn in fields, NASS estimated 97% of corn is mature, 4 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 93%.

Winter wheat planting, at 70% complete as of Sunday, fell behind both last year's 76% and the five-year average of 71%. NASS pegged winter wheat emergence at 44%, also behind last year's 50% and the five-year average of 47%.

"Kansas' winter wheat is 75% planted, Nebraska is 93% planted, while Oklahoma is lagging at 57% done versus the average of 72%," Mantini said.

The following are some other highlights from this week's Crop Progress report:

Sorghum mature was 93%, 5 percentage points ahead of average. Sorghum harvested was 59%, 9 percentage points ahead of average.

Cotton bolls opening was 86%, 2 percentage points behind the average. Cotton harvested was 28%, 6 percentage points behind the average. Cotton condition was rated 64% good to excellent, unchanged from the previous week.

Rice harvested was 92%, 1 percentage point ahead of the average pace.
