Two Hitches in One

Single and Double Tongue Hitch (Illustration by Ray E. Watkins Jr.)

Brandon Waldner, Kimball, South Dakota, built a hitch that works as both a single- and double-tongue hitch. The key is the top piece of the hitch, as seen in the illustration (accompanying this article). With the top portion of the hitch in the down position, Waldner has use of it as a heavy-duty, double-tongue hitch. When he removes the pin and flips the top portion of the tongue up and back, Waldner has a single-tongue configuration for lighter loads: same hitch body, different uses for different trailers.
