DTN Retail Fertilizer Trends
If Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz It Could Affect Urea Movement
OMAHA (DTN) -- Average retail prices for most fertilizers continued to be up from last month during the third week of June 2025, according to sellers surveyed by DTN. But for the second week in a row, no fertilizer saw a significant price move in either direction, which DTN designates as anything 5% or more. That could change, however, depending on how the current situation in the Middle East unfolds, according to one expert.
Retail prices for seven of the eight major fertilizers were up slightly from last month. DAP had an average price of $807 per ton, MAP $833/ton, potash $474/ton, urea $655/ton, 10-34-0 $669/ton, UAN28 $417/ton and UAN32 $495/ton.
The average price of one fertilizer was down slightly from last month. Anhydrous had an average price of $773/ton.
On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was $0.71/lb.N, anhydrous $0.47/lb.N, UAN28 $0.75/lb.N and UAN32 $0.77/lb.N.
Josh Linville, StoneX vice-president of fertilizers, wrote in a StoneX Fertilizer Flash Update on Monday that after the U.S. attack on Iran nuclear facilities this past weekend, the fertilizer market is intently watching Iran's response. A ceasefire between Israel and Iran was reached on Tuesday, only for it to be broken hours after the agreement was reached.

For the nitrogen market, the Strait of Hormuz is important in the movement of fertilizer. Roughly 52% of global urea exports come from the Middle East, Linville wrote. Iran has voted to close this narrow body of water with the intention of cutting the West off from this very important body of water, which would stop oil shipments.
The strait is also incredibly important for urea movement in the region, Linville wrote. If oil is the target, urea will be the innocent bystander caught up in the fight.
"This strait is not only important to the U.S., but a lot of the Western world, who is not going to sit idly by and allow this to happen," Linville wrote. "Still, even the threat has had bullish connotation to start this week."
The fertilizer market will be watching this situation closely, he wrote.
Seven fertilizers are now higher in price compared to one year earlier. MAP is 1% higher, both DAP and 10-34-0 are 4% more expensive, anhydrous are 5% higher, UAN28 is 18% more expensive, UAN32 is 24% higher and urea is 25% more expensive looking back to last year.
The remaining fertilizer continues to be lower. Potash is 7% lower compared to last year.
DTN gathers fertilizer price bids from agriculture retailers each week to compile the DTN Fertilizer Index. DTN first began reporting data in November 2008.

A military conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran could send ripples through the global fertilizer market, according to an article from the University of Illinois Extension. You can read about it here: https://www.dtnpf.com/….
