Wheat Yield Contest Results by State

Wheat is downright competitive for the Horton family, who farm and have a seed service near Leoti, Kansas. In 2019, individuals within the farm family once again ranked among the top in their state and in the nation for yield and percentage increase over county yield averages. DECATUR, Ill. (DTN) -- Great wheat growers are as diverse as the crop itself. The 2019 National Wheat Yield Contest allows an interesting snapshot of wheat's yield potential and how its performance varies by region.

The National Wheat Foundation announced the contest's 2019 state winners on Nov. 21, following an earlier announcement of the national winners. DTN/Progressive Farmer magazine is the official media outlet for the contest.

State winners for the 2019 contest included growers from 24 states.

"If you asked the general public where they think wheat is grown, they would say states like Kansas or Nebraska," stated Foundation Board President Wayne Hurst. "The National Wheat Yield Contest breaks this assumption and truly shows the diversity the wheat crop provides growers to be grown from the East to the West Coast and in between."

The contest recognizes winners in two primary competition categories, winter wheat and spring wheat, and two subcategories, dryland and irrigated. It also recognizes the percentage increase the yield exceeds in the most recent five-year Olympic county average as determined by USDA. To qualify for the contest, entries must also make Grade 1 or 2, the cutoff for food-grade wheat.

This year, the contest received 397 initial entries and finished with 154 final harvested samples -- an indication of the challenging environmental conditions of 2019. The quality assessment component eliminated 11 entries for a total of 143 eligible entries.

The 2020 National Wheat Yield Contest will open for registration on Jan. 1, 2020. Other sponsors of the contest include: Ardent Mills, AgriMaxx, BASF, Corteva, Croplan/Winfield, Indigo Ag, Grain Craft, John Deere, LCS, Mennel Milling, Miller Milling, Syngenta and WestBred.
