VT Marijuana Bill Heads to Gov's Desk

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- The legalization of recreational marijuana use in Vermont is now in the hands of Republican Gov. Phil Scott.

Vermont legislators sent their bill to Scott's desk Thursday, initiating a five-day countdown for the governor to make a decision on it.

Vermont is the only state in the country where recreational marijuana use has been approved by a legislature. If the bill becomes law, Vermont would be the ninth state to legalize the recreational use of pot.

Vermont Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/… ) that Scott has been lobbied by both supporters and opponents of the bill. The governor says he's not opposed to the legislation, but isn't sure Vermont should move forward until the state passes stronger highway safety measures.
