Texas Chili Cheese Sliders

A cast-iron skillet is key in cooking these sliders.(DTN/Progressive Farmer image by Rachel Johnson)

Makes: 6 sliders

Prep Time: 20 minutes

1 pound ground sirloin

1 cup canned tomatoes with chiles, drained (such as Rotel)

1 teaspoon kosher salt

6 white slider buns

3 cheddar cheese slices, cut in half

1 cup prepared Texas-style chili (such as Wolf)

6 small butter lettuce leaves

1 jalapeño, sliced (optional)

1. Gently mix sirloin, tomatoes and salt in a large bowl. Pat meat into 6 even burger patties (about 2.5 ounces each).

2. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Toast bun halves in skillet to desired doneness; set aside. Sear burger patties to desired doneness (about 5 minutes on each side). Top evenly with cheese slices.

3. Pour chili into a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in the microwave for 2 minutes, stirring halfway through.

4. Assemble burgers: Lay a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of the buns. Top with cheeseburger, two heaping tablespoons chili, jalapeño slices (if desired) and top bun halves. Secure with a toothpick.
