Progressive Agriculture Safety Day Program

More Than Kicking Tires and Watching Field Demos

(Progressive Agriculture Foundation)

Agriculturalists -- growers, producers and farm families -- travel from all corners of the United States to kick the tires, connect with industry experts and learn about the latest innovations in the agriculture industry during some of the largest outdoor farm shows in the nation. These venues create opportunities for thousands of face-to-face interactions, while providing a glimpse into trusted equipment and practices to implement on farms and ranches. And, although purchasing the latest model of tractor, grain bin or baler may come to mind first, these shows also include investing in the most important asset of a farming operation: our youth. For more than 20 years, the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day(R) (PAF Safety Day) program has been participating in farm shows to educate showgoers through hands-on demonstrations on basic, everyday safety and health practices to implement on their farms and ranches, and at home with the focus around youth. Individuals also learn how they can bring the PAF Safety Day program to their communities, as more generations continue to live and work off farms and ranches but may still frequently visit these busy, active workplaces.

Additionally, farm shows grant families a chance to share their farming legacies with their children, grandchildren or even great-grandchildren. While attending the show and visiting the PAF Safety Day booth, conversations are initiated with kids about why safety and health on the farm is so critical. A family member may share a story about a past injury that resulted from an agriculture-related incident or about a recent incident involving a child, and want to learn ways to prevent a similar situation from occurring to his or her family.

These events also strengthen the connections with current PAF Safety Day coordinators who offer the PAF Safety Day program in their communities and previous PAF Safety Day participants, such as 4-H and FFA members. At several shows throughout the season, teens and adults who volunteer with the Program join efforts with the staff in the PAF Safety Day booth and work together to educate visitors. While not all farm show attendees leave purchasing a new piece of equipment, the hope is that they leave feeling better informed and wanting to adopt safer and healthier practices on the farm.
