Commodities Market Impact Weather

OMAHA (DTN) -- A mixed Midwest rainfall outlook and chronic dryness again in the northern and western crop areas are the primary weather features for the commodity market's attention Friday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST RAIN

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for widely variable rain across the Midwest during the next week. Rainfall totals Thursday into Friday were heavy in southern Iowa, Missouri and portions of Illinois with some flooding. More showers are expected through the coming weekend in this same corridor. However, much lighter amounts are expected in the northwestern Midwest crop areas, where dryness and drought are expected to last through the balance of summer.

MORE SHOWERS FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains crop areas remain in a pattern of periodic moderate to locally heavy rain. Moisture is beneficial for row crops but is unfavorable for winter wheat harvest.

SCATTERED NORTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

Scattered showers have moved through the Northern Plains during the past couple of days but with very little rainfall. Scattered showers will continue through the weekend but are likely to be isolated and mostly light and should not have a significant impact on the ongoing drought conditions.

SCATTERED DELTA AND SOUTHEAST RAINFALL

Mostly scattered showers are in the forecast for the Delta and Southeast during the next seven days. Crop conditions are generally favorable.

WARM PRAIRIES PATTERN

In the Canadian Prairies, the next week features mostly above-normal temperatures. Soil moisture is declining due to a lack of consistent showers during the last week. More rainfall will be necessary for developing wheat and canola, though there is very little in the forecast during the next week.

SOUTHERN BRAZIL RAIN FOCUS

Across Brazil, central areas continue to be dry while southern areas have additional precipitation chances through early next week. A cold pattern moving into southern corn areas next week could produce some frost potential, further damaging corn prospects.

FAVORABLE EUROPE PATTERN

Across Europe, conditions remain favorable for crops. A system in Central Europe will continue to slowly move east through the weekend with periods of showers. High temperatures will continue east of this system until it arrives, however. Showers redeveloping across the west will continue to produce favorable soil moisture for developing wheat and corn.

RUSSIA HEAT

A hot pattern is in effect over Russia and Ukraine during the end of the week. Temperatures topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit several days this week in southwest Russia. The heat will slowly ease ahead of a shower pattern during the next five days. The heat favors winter wheat ripening but is drying out soil moisture for spring wheat and corn.
