Cooler for Midwest

OMAHA (DTN) -- Cooler conditions in the Midwest over the next week and only a brief respite from heat in the Southern Plains are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Monday.

COOLER MIDWEST FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for cooler temperatures and increasing showers in the Midwest this week. This combination will favor developing and reproductive crops.

EARLY-WEEK SOUTHERN PLAINS SHOWERS

In the Southern Plains, showers and cooler temperatures will favor reproductive corn and soybeans through north and central areas early this week. Hotter and drier conditions will increase the risk to reproductive crops later this week.

LIMITED WEST TEXAS RAIN

West Texas cotton areas have slight chances for showers early this week, followed by a return to hot and dry conditions.

MOSTLY FAVORABLE IN NORTHERN PLAINS

Northern Plains crops are in mostly good to excellent condition at this time, especially in North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Showers and a more variable temperature pattern in the eastern and southeast areas this week will favor developing crops. Drier and hotter weather in Montana spring wheat areas may increase the stress to this crop.

SHOWERS OVER CANADIAN PRAIRIES

Scattered showers favoring west-central and northern Canadian Prairies crop areas occurred during the past weekend. Southeast areas were hot early, and cooler later. A variable temperature pattern and episodes of scattered showers during this week will favor developing crops.

WEEKEND RUSSIA RAIN

Moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms occurred late in the weekend period and overnight Sunday night in southeast Ukraine and southern Russia. This was the most significant rain that has occurred in the areas all summer long. This should ease stress to reproductive and filling crops. It is unlikely to significantly improve prospects for corn but filling soybeans and sunflower may benefit.

SCATTERED NORTHEAST CHINA RAIN

Northeast China had hotter temperatures during the past weekend with thunderstorms over mainly southeast areas. The region is forecast to have scattered thunderstorms and near- to above-normal temperatures this week, mostly favoring crops.

HOT CENTRAL CHINA TREND

Central China will have a strong upper-level ridge building inland from the east during this period. This likely will lead to fairly hot temperatures and mostly dry conditions through east-central, southeast and central areas. Northern areas may also turn hot and dry during the week, but this area had significant rain last week and during the weekend, so it is not as much of a concern.

DRYNESS REDUCES AUSTRALIA WHEAT

Australia wheat areas continue to struggle with record or near-record dryness over the past three-and-one-half months. Wheat production is now expected to amount to the lowest total in the past eight years.

FAVORABLE INDIA MONSOON

India satellite images indicate average monsoon development for this point in the season. Rainfall potential during the next week is favorable to excessive from central interior areas northward, except possibly in far west areas of the north India region and in Pakistan.
