OMAHA (DTN) -- Another round of cool and dry conditions for the Midwest, and promising Southern Plains rain chances, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

COOL BUT DRY MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for mild temperatures across the Midwest through the next week to 10 days. Temperatures are favorable for filling corn and filling soybeans. However, significant dryness is still in effect in Iowa, with no improvement indicated in the forecast. Meanwhile, mostly favorable weather for filling corn and soybeans is noted in the eastern Midwest.

RAIN FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Southern Plains crop areas have generally favorable conditions for developing crops. Rainfall of moderate to locally heavier amounts is forecast for this week, which will offer additional benefit overall.

STILL DRY IN NORTHERN PLAINS

In the Northern Plains, cooler temperatures will ease stress crops. However, rainfall remains limited. Extensive production loss in spring wheat has already occurred, with corn also in line for drought damage.

TROPICAL STORM FRANKLIN

As of Tuesday morning, Tropical Storm Franklin was located 55 miles north-northwest of Chetumal, Mexico. Franklin is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph. A west-northwestward to westward motion is expected during the next couple of days. The center of Franklin will continue to move across the Yucatan Peninsula Tuesday, and emerge over the Bay of Campeche Tuesday night. Franklin will then move westward across the Bay of Campeche on Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 50 mph with higher gusts. Weakening is expected while Franklin moves across the Yucatan Peninsula. Re-strengthening is forecast to begin Tuesday night and Wednesday while Franklin moves over the Bay of Campeche.

LIGHT PRAIRIES RAIN FORECAST

Canadian Prairies crop areas have light rain in the forecast through the end of the week. The rain may offer benefit to canola. However, wheat and corn production is expected to be lower because of drought and heat, especially during July. However, a turn to hot and dry conditions in the six- to 10-day period will increase stress.

SCATTERED UKRAINE AND RUSSIA DRYNESS

Generally favorable soil moisture for crops in Ukraine and Russia is noted, except more rain would benefit in southeast Ukraine and southwest portions of the southern district of Russia.

FAVORABLE NORTHEAST CHINA RAIN

Beneficial rain continues for reproductive to filling corn and soybeans in northeast China.

DRIER IN WEST INDIA TREND

Drier weather favors planting and developing oilseeds and cotton in the major growing areas of west-central India.

MORE RAIN NEEDED IN AUSTRALIA

Some beneficial rain for wheat in Australia has occurred; however, more is needed as rainfall totals remain well below normal since May 1.
