OMAHA (DTN) -- A strong winter storm for the Northern Plains and northern Midwest this coming weekend, and rain occurring in central Argentina, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Thursday.

VARIABLE MIDWEST STORM FORECAST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for varied precipitation from winter storm conditions forming through the upcoming holiday weekend. A major storm system moves through the western and northern Midwest Sunday with a combination of rain and snow. Heavy snow is indicated for the northwestern portion of the region. In the eastern Midwest, warmer weather and rain will favor winter wheat, along with helping to ease recent dryness. There are no significant cold weather threats forecast through the 10-day period.

LIMITED SOUTHERN PLAINS MOISTURE

In the Southern Plains, dry conditions continue to rule the scene, especially in western areas. A winter storm system during the coming holiday weekend offers some rain chances. However, precipitation appears to be light with much more needed to ease drought impact.

WEEKEND STORM FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

A major winter storm is indicated for the Northern Plains on Sunday with heavy snow and possible blizzard conditions in western areas, and mixed precipitation changing to snow in eastern areas. The storm has a high potential for causing transportation delays and livestock stress. Seasonally-cold weather follow this storm. Any risk of much colder weather is longer range and therefore somewhat uncertain.

SHOWERS IN BRAZIL

Across Brazil, generally favorable conditions for developing crops remain in effect. Additional rains are occurring in many crop areas, including some of the drier sectors in the northeastern part of the country.

BENEFICIAL ARGENTINA TREND

In central Argentina, showers and thunderstorms developed Wednesday night and continue Thursday. This timely and beneficial rain has some follow-up activity indicated during the next five days. The trend will favor developing corn and soybeans.
