READER: I have a John Deere 5510 tractor that has developed a steering problem. It jerks a little and seems like the pump is running out of hydraulic oil. I changed the hydraulic filter, but it did not help.

STEVE: I get this question many times each year because it is a common problem on the John Deere 5000 series tractors, and the fix is difficult to find. There is a hydraulic oil screen filter on the lower, right rear of the tractor. In order to clean the screen, you need to remove the screen filter on the back of the tractor. Inside this cover is a long screen filter. You will lose all of your hydraulic oil when you remove it. I usually try to park the tractor on a steep decline to help with this problem. Remove the two cap screws that secure the cover and O ring, and remove the long screen filter. I bet you will find the screen partially restricted
