Not So Good Changing the Coolant

(Photo illustration by Barry Falkner)

READER: I have an 8400 John Deere tractor with an 8.1 engine. How often do you recommend changing the coolant in the radiator?

STEVE: I like to change the coolant in my tractors and implements with lighter use at least every three years and every two years on the workhorses. But, I'm really bad about getting that done. I bet I am like most. I change it when I have a hose leak, radiator leak or water pump leak, blow a head gasket or get an engine overhaul. Thanks for sending in the question on coolant change. I bet I'm not alone in being reminded that I have coolant in tractors long overdue for a change.
