Potash Hits Highest Price in 8 Years at $501 Per Ton

OMAHA (DTN) -- Potash continues to lead retail fertilizer prices higher, according to locations tracked by DTN for the second week of July 2021.

For the fourth week in a row, potash saw the largest month-to-month gain, increasing 10% from June to an average price of $501/ton. This marks the first time potash has had an average price above $500/ton since the fourth week of September 2013 when the fertilizer was at $500/ton.

The other fertilizer that was significantly higher, which DTN designates as 5% or more, was DAP. The phosphorus fertilizer was 5% more expensive compared to the prior month and now has an average price of $693/ton.

The average urea price was 4% higher than last month at $550/ton, while MAP gained 2% to $730/ton.

The price of the remaining four fertilizers were all higher than last month, but only by 1% or less. 10-34-0 cost $624/ton, anhydrous $725/ton, UAN28 $368/ton and UAN32 $418/ton.

On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was at $0.60/lb.N, anhydrous $0.44/lb.N, UAN28 $0.66/lb.N and UAN32 $0.65/lb.N.

Dow Jones reports fertilizer prices, specifically ammonia and DAP prices, could decline some in the next six months, according to UBS, an investment bank. While fundamentals mean prices will stay at relatively high levels compared to a year ago, the firm forecasts an average price of DAP in the second half of 2021 at $488/ton compared to $575/ton currently.

DAP has been rallying on strengthening global agriculture demand, recovering soybean and corn prices and recent U.S. countervailing duties on Moroccan and Russian imports. UBS also forecasts ammonia prices to average of $498/ton in the second half of the year versus of spot price of $585/ton.

Retail fertilizer prices compared to a year ago show all fertilizers have increased significantly.

10-34-0 is now 34% more expensive, potash is 39% higher, urea is 53% more expensive, anhydrous is 58% higher, UAN32 is 59% more expensive, UAN28 64% higher, and both DAP and MAP are 71% more expensive compared to last year.
