Oil Futures Fall on Possible Diplomatic Talks
HOUSTON, TX (DTN) – Oil futures fell below $100 bbl Monday, as traders weighed the possibility of talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of this week's United Nations General Assembly.
With the U.S.-Iran conflict now in its eighth month, market participants are looking for signs that renewed diplomacy could ease geopolitical risk and reopen a path toward negotiated de-escalation.
Separately, Trump is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for a third time in less than a year, as the tariff war initiated by the United States continues to shape broader market sentiment. China, the world's largest energy consumer, has maintained a posture of armed neutrality and diplomatic mediation during the conflict.

However, physical supply risks remain active across key Middle East infrastructure. Yemen's Houthi forces launched fresh strikes over the weekend against targets in Riyadh and a Saudi Aramco facility in Yanbu.
Equipment damage along Aramco's 7 million bpd East-West pipeline has forced the state oil giant to shift export allocations back toward Persian Gulf terminals. But the partial recovery in shipment from Saudi Arabia are contributing to the bearish sentiment in the oil futures markets as well.
Secondary tracking and satellite data indicate Saudi crude flows moving through the Strait of Hormuz averaged 2.9 million bpd over the past six days, versus the 700,000 bpd monthly average recorded in August.
The front-month NYMEX WTI crude futures contract dropped $4.30, or 4.29%, to $96.00 bbl.
ICE Brent for November delivery fell $3.29, or 3.177%, to $100.58 bbl.
Downstream, NYMEX ULSD for October delivery declined $0.1558, or 3.08%, to $4.9020 gallon.
RBOB for October decreased $0.0722, or 2.05%, to $3.4554 gallon.
In contrast, the U.S. Dollar Index strengthened 0.195 points to 100.125 against a basket of foreign currencies.
