OMAHA (DTN) -- A stormy week ahead for the Midwest, and ongoing favorable late-season prospects in South America, are the key weather items for the commodity trade's attention Tuesday.

STORMY PERIOD FOR MIDWEST

The DTN ag weather forecast calls for an active and stormy pattern across the Midwest during the next week to 10 days. A series of storm systems moving through the region is expected to produce moderate to heavy snow in the western Midwest, and locally heavy rain in the eastern Midwest. The rain, snow and cold will affect transportation and stress livestock.

Significant flooding is possible in the Midwest this spring due to heavy rains and snowmelt. In addition, strong winds will be featured, along with the threat of severe weather.

STRESSFUL SOUTHERN PLAINS COLD

In the Southern Plains, harsh winter weather during the past weekend brought increased stress to livestock in feedlots; the greatest occurrence has been in western Kansas. Snow cover in northern sectors has likely protected winter wheat from cold-weather damage. However, southern areas may have incurred some stress from the cold due to much lighter snow cover.

FAVORABLE BRAZIL PATTERN

The central Brazil trend remains favorable for developing second-crop (safrinha) corn. The soybean harvest continues in central Brazil and is running well ahead of normal. Favorable weather is also in effect for late=filling, maturing and harvesting soybeans in southern Brazil.

WETTER PATTERN FOR ARGENTINA

In Argentina, heavy rain early this week will provide adequate to surplus soil moisture for filling crops. Some disruption to harvest may have occurred, but the overall effect is favorable for crop prospects.
