Wet Weather Hampers Harvest

Soybean harvest progress is now running behind normal in the western Midwest and Northern Plains. Corn harvest is still ahead of normal. Soybeans tend to be harvested before corn in the northwest Midwest and Northern Plains. Harvest progress is mostly running ahead of normal in the eastern Midwest where the weather has been more favorable.

The overall weather pattern during the next 6-10 days is expected to feature a trough over the central and eastern U.S. and a ridge in the west. The trough is expected to be far enough to the east to limit precipitation in the central U.S. However, drying weather will be poor with lots of clouds, cool temperatures and episodes of light rain. It appears the harvest season could be drawn out this fall with many areas falling behind normal on progress for both corn and soybeans during the next week or two.

Good to excellent corn ratings in the Midwest dropped by several points in both Nebraska and Iowa likely due to excessive wetness. Ratings were mostly unchanged elsewhere.

No significant changes from last week in Brazil. Planting got off to an early start, especially in Parana due to early season rains. Rainfall will average near to below normal in Mato Grosso during the next 7 days, which could limit soybean planting. Near to above normal rainfall in Parana will favor planting and crop development with the expectation of some early harvest towards the beginning of the new year.

Soil moisture looks adequate at this time for upcoming corn and soybean planting in central Argentina.
