One of the driest weeks of the growing season in the northwest Midwest last week benefitted maturing corn and soybeans. However it is not a sign of things to come with heavy rains returning early this week. The overall comments regarding crop conditions in the Midwest continue to focus on it being too wet with some reports of mold, rust and stalk rot along with reports of sudden death syndrome in soybeans. Only in central Nebraska are there some comments about it being too dry. The outlook for the next 7-10 days will continue to feature near to above normal rainfall along with near to above normal temperatures. This would further increase disease issues as well as disrupting the early harvest. There is no sign of any early freeze conditions developing at this time.

Soil moisture continues to improve in the Southern Plains winter wheat belt with planting just getting underway. Near to above normal rainfall and near to above normal temperatures during the next 7-10 days will be nearly ideal for planting and emergence of the winter wheat crop.

Warm weather and limited rainfall across the southern states during the next 7-10 days will favor the ongoing corn harvest and the increasing soybean harvest.

No sign of a developing La Nina in the Pacific with our calculation of the sea surface temperature departure for the month of August right at normal.
