China's Xi Outlines Wide Trade Plan

BEIJING (AP) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced ambitious plans for Asian and European governments to work more closely on finance, law enforcement and a wide array of other issues under a Beijing-led trade initiative.

Xi spoke Monday as leaders of 30 nations wrapped up a two-day meeting to promote China's "Belt and Road" initiative. It calls for expanding trade across Asia, Africa and Europe by investing in ports, railways and other facilities.

Xi expressed hope for cooperation in areas including law enforcement, economic policy and anti-corruption. He acknowledged that the initiative is in its early stages and faces daunting obstacles.

Governments including Russia, the United States and India have expressed unease about Beijing's possible political motives in pursuing the trade initiative. Xi's hopes for even wider cooperation could add to potential opposition.
