DTN Retail Fertilizer Trends

LINCOLN, Neb. (DTN) -- Most retailer fertilizer prices continued their downward track in the third week of July for the seventh consecutive week, as five of the nutrients tracked by DTN were lower compared to the previous month.

In all, four of the eight fertilizers saw significant month-over-month price drops. DTN designates a significant move as anything 5% or more.

The five fertilizers with average price drops were led by UAN32, which dipped 14% compared to last month with an average price of $461 per ton. Anhydrous prices dropped by 11% to $962/ton, after falling under $1,000/ton for the first time since the third week of March.

The average price of UAN28 fell by 6% to $473/ton. DTN data shows that one year ago the price of UAN28 was 13% higher.

Urea saw a 5% drop in average price to $683/ton, one week after falling below the $700/ton mark in 17 weeks. The nutrient 10-34-0 also fell by 1% to $718/ton.

The remaining three nutrients showed slight increases from the previous month. MAP's average price increased by 1% to $958/ton, while DAP increased slightly to $913/ton and potash to $494/ton.

On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was $0.74/lb.N, anhydrous $0.59/lb.N, UAN28 $0.85/lb.N and UAN32 $0.72/lb.N. Seven of eight fertilizers are now higher in price compared to one year earlier, with UAN32 coming in 7% less expensive.

In Mexico, private companies Fermachem and Gas y Petroquimica de Occidente are investing more than $3.2 billion to build two fertilizer complexes, according to Mexico Business News.

The projects are designed to expand production capacity for granulated urea and ammonia.

Fermachem broke ground on a $1.6 billion facility in Lerdo, Durango, in June 2026.

According to Mexico Business News, that plant is slated to begin commercial production in 2029 using self-generated electricity and carbon capture technologies to produce about 1 million metric tons of granulated urea annually.

Gas y Petroquimica de Occidente is building a $1.6 billion anhydrous ammonia plant in Topolobampo, Sinaloa. The plant is expected to produce about 800,000 tons annually starting in 2027.

Mexico Business News reported that the plant is about 80% completed.

"Once operational, the Topolobampo facility will become Latin America's largest merchant ammonia plant, positioning Sinaloa as a strategic hub for chemical production and agricultural input security," according to the publication.

Potash is 2% higher, urea is 6% more expensive, 10-34-0 is now 7% higher, DAP is 13% more expensive, MAP is 9% higher, UAN28 is 13% more expensive and anhydrous is 26% higher looking back to last year.
