December 2018 US Exports of Ethanol, DDGs Down From Prior Year

OMAHA (DTN) -- U.S. exports of goods and services totaled $205.1 billion in December, down $3.9 billion from November, the U.S. Census Bureau reported on Wednesday. Imports totaled $264.9 billion, up $5.5 billion on the month. The resulting trade deficit of $59.8 billion for December was up from $50.3 billion in November. USDA later provided more details for exports of ethanol, biodiesel and distillers grains.

USDA said U.S. exports of ethanol totaled 139.8 million gallons in December, down from 147.9 million in November and down 20% from a year ago. Brazil was the top destination again in December, accounting for 27% of total exports, followed by Canada. In 2018, U.S. ethanol exports were up 24% from a year ago, the equivalent of 609 million bushels of corn.

U.S. exports of biodiesel totaled 8,646.2 metric tons (mt) in December, less than half of November's total, but up 75% from a year ago. Once again, Canada was the top destination in December, taking 71% of all U.S. exports, followed by Netherlands and Switzerland. In all of 2018, U.S. exports of biodiesel were up 10% from a year ago.

U.S. exports of distillers grains totaled 890,491 mt in December, down from 1,016,544 mt in November and down 9% from a year ago. U.S. distillers grains continue to find broad interest with Mexico, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and South Korea listed as the top five destinations. 2018 ended with exports of U.S. distillers grains up 8% from a year ago.
