New York City Council OKs Bill to Raise Biodiesel Mandate

NEW YORK (DTN) -- New York City Council Wednesday approved legislation that would increase the amount of biodiesel required to be blended with home heating oil used in the city to 5% from the current 2%, a spokeswoman for the council confirmed, with the increase in the mandate to take effect in October 2017.

The legislation passed overwhelming, with 47 voting for the measure while three voted against.

The legislation now needs the consent of Mayor Bill de Blasio, said the spokeswoman, adding the biodiesel blending mandate still requires a gradual increase to 20% by 2035 to assist in meeting the city's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The legislation was sponsored by Councilman Costa Constantinides who represents the 22nd district of the borough of Queens.
