REG Geismar Plant Reopens After Fire

STREATOR, Ill. (DTN) -- The 75-million gallon per year Geismar renewable diesel biorefinery in Louisiana was shut down temporarily at midnight local time due to a fire, according to a statement issued by the Renewable Energy Group Friday morning.

REG told DTN operations have resumed at the plant.

"Emergency crews quickly responded to contain the fire and it was declared completely extinguished at 4:20 a.m.," REG said. "All employees on site have been accounted for. Four people -- one REG employee and three contractors -- were injured and are being treated at Baton Rouge General Hospital."

REG said the cause of the fire is under investigation. There was a previous fire at the plant April 2.

REG acquired the plant in June 2014, and started operations at the facility Oct. 23 of last year.

Renewable Energy Group, Inc. is a North American advanced biofuels such as biodiesel and renewable diesel producer and developer of renewable chemicals with 11 active biorefineries across the country, research and development capabilities.
