Our Rural Roots

Wear Your Hat Proudly

Meredith Bernard wears her farming hat with pride. (Meredith Bernard)

I didn't grow up on a farm, but for almost half of my life, I've worn the hat of a farmer. It took me a long time to actually own that title, because sometimes it takes a while for a new "hat" to fit well. Partly because I didn't feel qualified to be in the role I found myself in and partly because, in my mind, society placed more value on men in farming than women. Twenty years later, I see that very differently.

Time is the best teacher, and over the years, I've added skills to my farming "resume" that I never dreamed I'd be proficient in. Farming is truly the "house that built me." I've learned that I can do hard things, and a lot of my willingness to try has come from watching other women thriving in the same field. Through social media, I've had the opportunity to connect with many female farmers who have inspired, encouraged and taught me much over the years. Some of my best friends are fellow farmers. The sisterhood runs deep.

In a world where farming in its broadest sense is vital to sustaining life as we know it, I'm proud of the role I've played and the work all my fellow female farmers play day in and out alongside our male counterparts. I've always said we're "better together," and I'll never not believe that. In the last 20 years, I've seen opportunities for community and education grow for myself and others in my shoes, and I realize there's always room for more. More support. More community. More training. More resources.

If we remain focused on what's truly important -- staying true to our farming roots and the importance we play in society -- the future is bright for us all. Wear your farming hat proudly.
