Active, Colder Weather Pattern Expected Next Week

MINNEAPOLIS (DTN) -- An active and eventually colder pattern for the rest of March, a return of rain to Brazil and excessive rain in parts of Argentina are the weather factors driving the markets Friday.

CLIPPER MOVING THROUGH MIDWEST THIS WEEKEND

A system brought widespread thunderstorms to the Midwest over the last couple of days, as well as a host of severe storms. That has moved out of the region, but a clipper moving through this weekend will bring some lake-effect snow and a burst of colder air. Another clipper moving across the north and east will reinforce some of that cold air on Tuesday and a colder and more active storm track will follow behind it. That will mean more opportunities for heavy rain but also snow through at least the end of the month.

SHOWERS MAY CONTINUE FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS

Scattered showers and severe weather have been going through the Central and Southern Plains over the last couple of days, as well as heavy snow in the front range. The main cold front will continue with showers in Texas on Friday, but an upper-level low will tend to produce some scattered showers across the south going into next week. That low finally moves eastward in the middle of next week with more widespread showers and the pattern will be very active behind it for the rest of March. No guarantees of precipitation for southwestern wheat areas that have been missing out on the precipitation, but there is some good opportunity for building soil moisture.

BURST OF COLD FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

A clipper system will move through the Northern plains on Friday and Saturday with isolated snow and a quick burst of cold air. The cold will not stick around for very long, but additional systems moving through starting the middle of next week should reinforce that cold air. Those systems will also bring widespread precipitation to the region.

MORE SHOWERS FOR THE DELTA

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are moving through the Delta on Friday. A front moving through this weekend will bring more showers through, as well as a burst of cooler air. The pattern looks active through the end of the month, which will give opportunities for more heavy rainfall to build and maintain good soil moisture in the region, but could be overly heavy, which would slow down thoughts of early fieldwork and planting.

WETTER NEXT WEEK FOR BRAZIL

Scattered showers have been limited to central and especially northern Brazil this week, unfavorable for safrinha corn as it has been drier across the south. However, a front moving north out of Argentina this weekend will bring in more widespread and beneficial showers to a good portion of the country next week, as well as another front moving through later in the week.

HEAVY RAIN IN ARGENTINA

A front has been stuck in the middle of Argentina and produced scattered showers that have been heavy in some areas, but otherwise favorable for filling corn and soybeans. The front will move into northern areas this weekend where it will probably remain active into next week. Another front will push it northward in the middle of next week. Some areas will get too much rain and others not enough but is widespread enough to be beneficial for both corn and soybeans.

WHEAT IN GOOD CONDITION IN BLACK SEA

A system continues with isolated showers in the Black Sea region Friday and Saturday. Another system will move into western areas early next week with some showers as well. Though the rain is not all that widespread, soil moisture in the region is favorable. Above-normal temperatures will continue through next week and the crop is currently in good condition.

FRANCE STILL WET IN ACTIVE EUROPEAN PATTERN

Systems will scrape through northern Europe going into next week with scattered showers. Another system may go through southern areas later next week with meaningful rain. Good rain has fallen across the south recently, favoring early-developing winter wheat, but could use more. France remains too wet and could use some drier conditions, but it remains active there anyway. Temperatures continue to be mild to warm and wheat should continue to develop early.
