Snow Coming for Southwestern Plains

MINNEAPOLIS (DTN) -- Several systems moving through the U.S. with a changing pattern, including snow in the southwestern Plains, showers in central Brazil, and waves of heavy rain in Argentina are the weather factors driving the markets Friday.

LIMITED SHOWERS, SOME SNOW FOR MIDWEST

A system went through the Midwest on Thursday with rare severe storms around northern Illinois. The front to the system will bring showers to southern areas this weekend and a third impulse could bring showers to the far south Sunday and Monday as a mix of rain and snow near the Ohio River. Temperatures continue to be above normal even after the systems move through. A clipper may come through later next week with a shot of colder air but it would likely be brief.

RAIN AND SNOW FOR CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS

A couple more waves to this week's storm will bring showers through the Central and Southern Plains through the weekend, with heavier rain and snow on Sunday from West Texas into Oklahoma. Temperatures are falling behind the system but continue to be mild outside of where the snow falls. More fronts will move through next week with limited showers. We may see a system developing across the south with more significant showers next weekend.

PERIODS OF LIGHT SNOW FOR NORTHERN PLAINS

A storm system brought a mix of rain and snow to the Northern Plains the last couple of days. Waves of isolated snow will be possible through next week. Recent and forecast precipitation will help to ease some of the recent dryness in the region. Temperatures will stay mild through early next week, but we could see a clipper bringing some colder air later next week.

DELTA GETTING MORE RAIN

Soil moisture is much improved and drought continues to decrease in the Delta region. Water levels along the Mississippi River and local rivers are also much higher, increasing transportation. A front stalling out in the region will develop showers through Saturday with a system moving along it with more widespread heavier rain on Sunday and into Monday.

SHOWERS MOVING FROM CENTRAL TO SOUTHERN BRAZIL

Scattered showers should continue across central Brazil through the weekend, becoming more isolated next week. Southern areas may have to wait until early next week for more widespread showers to move in but they could be significant when they do as several fronts will move into the south next week. Central areas are still running significant rainfall deficits and soil moisture is not favorable for the safrinha corn crop that is being planted. Heavy rain needs to fall over the next two months to produce a good crop.

HEAVY RAIN IN ARGENTINA

A front is finally bringing good showers to much of Argentina through the weekend while temperatures will fall back to normal as well. Another front moves through early next week with good showers and could linger in the country for a bit next week as well. The heavy rainfall is needed to turn around crop conditions after more than two weeks of dry conditions and a week of 100-degree Fahrenheit heat sending soil moisture and crop conditions plummeting.

RAIN MOVING THROUGH SOUTHERN EUROPE

A storm system is moving through southern Europe with several impulses through next week which will help reverse the dryness trend for Spain and Italy. Temperatures will continue to be warm with no threat of an arctic freeze.
