Carrico Joins DTN/Progressive Farmer Staff
Sometimes unexpected paths lead us where we don't even know we can go, which is how I have come to where I am professionally, and I couldn't be more excited to start my role as Senior Livestock Editor at DTN/Progressive Farmer.
I live on our family's Heritage Farm near Redfield, Iowa, which has been in the family since 1871. My children, Kassidy and Klayton, are the sixth generation to grow up on our beef cattle and crop farm.
I have a bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in animal science and a minor in journalism. This combination has led me to working for several publications throughout my more than 25-year career, including Iowa Farmer Today, High Plains Journal and Wallaces Farmer. Throughout all my years as an agricultural journalist, I have most enjoyed telling the story of and for the farmer and rancher and I'm glad to be able to continue this with my new role.
On the farm, I have a small beef herd and raise seedstock and show cattle. My children have shown successfully across the country, which has been a big part of our life. They are the third generation on both sides of their lineage to raise and show cattle. We also have crop ground, which is managed by my parents, who also still live on the farm.
My children are both seniors. Kassidy will graduate from Oklahoma State University in May 2024 with a degree in animal science. Klayton is a senior in high school and is searching for the right college to continue his academic and football career.
I have been involved in professional organizations such as the Livestock Publications Council where I served as president in 2019-20, received their distinguished service award in 2015 and their work horse award in 2021. I received the master writer award from the Agricultural Communicators Network in 2017 and have served on several committees.
I look forward to covering all things livestock, as the cattle industry has been my passion since I was a young child. Feel free to reach out to me with story ideas and I'll add them to my list.
